National Academy of Science & The International Association of Chiefs of Police

A Look at the Status of Forensic Science in the United States

In 2009, the National Academy of Science released its landmark report, "Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Look Forward".

The report outlines a number of recommendations for the delivery of forensic services to the criminal justice community.

Included among the issues identified in the NAS report are noted deficiencies in the availability of skilled and well trained personnel. The report also calls for mandatory certification and accreditation. The NAS report covers a variety of forensic disciplines that include persons working in the fields of

  • Crime Scene Investigation
  • Biological Evidence
  • Friction Ridge Analysis
  • Shoeprints and Tire Tracks
  • Bloodstain Pattern Analysis

In 2006, three years prior to the NAS report, the members of the International Association of Chiefs of Police supported a resolution by their Forensics Committee. That resolution recognized the increasingly important role of forensic science and evidence in the criminal justice system.

You can read "The Need for Mandatory Accreditation and Certification" in the September 2009 issue of The Police Chief, the IACP magazine. This article does an excellent job summarizing the significance of the NAS report to law enforcement.

You will also want to read "Forensic Science - A Critical Concern for Police Chiefs", written by Joseph Polski, COO of the International Association for Identification.

The message is clear. The demand for improved training and services is here.
